When truckers are distracted

With the arrival of the holiday season comes the need for truck drivers in Tennessee to spend longer hours on the road than usual. In an effort to make their shipment quotas and deadlines, many large vehicle operators are using distractions to keep themselves awake when they are behind the wheel. Distracted driving is an easily correctable behavior, states American Trucking Associations. When truck drivers are distracted, their driving performance suffers and puts everyone in danger on the streets.

Common methods of distraction

Driving for long hours can be lonely for many big rig operators. Much of their time is spent on the roads and many of them are using it to contact their friends and family to help keep them from becoming bored and falling asleep. Using their cellphones to have conversations and exchange text messages are major sources of distractions. According to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, “commercial vehicle operators are not allowed to text while they drive”. Those who are caught doing so are breaking the law and face legal action, fines and risk losing their jobs.

Many truck drivers have to travel in unfamiliar territories causing them to rely on maps and GPS devices to get to their destinations. Instead of pulling over to the side of the roads or checking for directions at rest stops, many big rig operators are using their maps and GPS devices to guide them while they are operating their vehicles. When they are checking for directions, they are no longer looking fully at the roads and the vehicles that are around them.

Truck drivers who are distracted from performing their jobs properly for even a few seconds are a danger to everyone. Big rig operators should remind themselves of the dangers that this behavior presents and take corrective actions to prevent it.

Hit-and-run accidents

Hit-and-run accidents are happening so often in Tennessee that they are becoming a common occurrence. People who are involved in these situations often find themselves dealing with a wide range of consequences that are often life-altering and devastating. Drivers should make themselves more aware of the potential ramifications of this type of situation so they can take measures to avoid them.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Highway Loss Data Institute, there were 892 fatal motor vehicle accidents in 2014. Nine percent of those who died were pedestrians. The percent of occupants who were in passenger cars at the time of those incidents attributed was 43. Alcohol, distracted-driving and other factors all contribute to the number and severity of hit-and-run accidents.

Drivers who flee from the scene of accidents are not making the situations better. In their quest to avoid responsibility for their actions, they are leaving behind a trail of chaos and heartache for many victims and their families. Not all fender benders that occur in this type of situation results in minor injuries. Some victims are left critically injured and may require ongoing medical care and support for the rest of their lives.

The number of traffic deaths is declining, but there is a significant uptick in the number of hit-and-run occurrences, states USA Today. Motorists who crash into the vehicles of other drivers and then leave the scene are not acting responsibly. They are not exercising proper driving judgment and they are inadvertently putting other motorists on the roads at risk for harm.

It is imperative for people who are involved in hit-and-run accidents to try and get as much information as they can regarding drivers who collide with their cars. Along with getting descriptions of those motorists, they should try to remember the makes and models of their vehicles and plate numbers. Providing law enforcement with these details can lead to their apprehension and make the roads a safer place.

Sleep deprivation and driving

It is not uncommon for motorists in Tennessee to spend long hours on the road. Many drivers who do so are not aware that they are operating their vehicles while they are deprived of sleep. Drowsy driving is quickly becoming an epidemic. With the amount of traffic steadily increasing on the streets, many motorists are noticing that it takes them much longer to reach their destinations.

The impact of sleepy drivers

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year, sleepy drivers are responsible for up to 6,000 deaths. For every 25 motorists, one driver from that group drives while they are deprived of sleep. Many drivers are not able to accurately gauge when they are too tired to operate their vehicles safely. Others are simply trying to make it to where they need to go and may not care.

Many people used to perceive drowsy driving as a truck driver problem. However, people who have certain medical disorders like sleep apnea and those who work certain shifts also suffer from being too tired to drive, states Advanced Sleep Medicine Services, Inc. There may also be other factors that contribute to people operating vehicles when they lack rest. Driving while one is sleep deprived is so risky that it presents the same amount of dangers as drunk driving.

Sleep deprivation affects driving skills

Sleep deprived driving, also known as drowsy driving can result in some serious consequences for everyone on the roads. Motorists who are not fully rested while they are operating their vehicles have slower reaction times. They are not able to process the information their eyes are receiving well enough to make good driving judgments. They are also not as alert and attentive to the road as they should be. In the event that nearby motorists are not paying attention, driving recklessly or engaging in some type of improper traffic offense, sleepy drivers are not able to maneuver their vehicles safely out of harm’s way to prevent injury to themselves or others.

Drivers should pay close attention to how they feel at all times while they are on the roads. Motorists who recognize when they are driving while fatigued and take appropriate actions to keep themselves and other drivers safe.

Taking selfies while driving latest distraction

It is hard for motorists in Tennessee to avoid the temptation of incorporating social media into their everyday lives. With so many of them taking selfies while they are driving, it is not very surprising that distracted car incidents are on the rise. According to CNN, teenagers and young adult drivers and their passengers are the biggest perpetrators of this offense. They are not the only ones who are guilty of engaging in this type distracted driving behavior. Plane pilots, motorcyclists and boat operators are also taking selfies during the operations of their vehicles.

Social media is becoming an impairment to drivers, states Social Media Week. It leads to distracted driving which is now a leading cause of danger for motorists. Eating while behind the wheel is now considered a less risky form of distracted driving when compared to taking selfies. Every time a motorist uses their phone to take a picture of themselves, they double their risk of being involved in an accident. This behavior causes them to remove their focus and vision off the road for as little as two to three seconds, which is more than enough time for a pedestrian or vehicle to cross their path and a traffic light to change. As a result, many states are ramping up their enforcement procedures and creating stricter laws and civil and criminal penalties to combat distracted driving.

Drivers who are a part of the selfie trend should avoid using their cellphones and mobile devices until their vehicles are stopped and off the road. Consideration should be given to the safety of their passengers and all other motorists.

Guarding against [uninsured/underinsured] drivers

As the number of motorists on the roads in Tennessee continue to increase; so does the number of underinsured and uninsured drivers. Before any motorists decide to hit the road, they should take action to protect themselves against underinsure and uninsured drivers. According to Consumerreports.org, there are 30 million people who drive their vehicles without insurance. It is not always possible to identify these drivers. However, there are actions one can take to limit their interaction with them and avoid them.

There are laws in place to penalize uninsured motorists who operate vehicles without being properly insured. Motorists should be prepared to protect themselves the best they can. Purchasing an underinsured/uninsured insurance policy may offer drivers more protection and recourse if they are involved in car accidents with those offenders.

These policies keep insured motorists from having to foot the bill for any injuries and damages their regular auto insurance policies do not cover, states Carinsurance.com. For example, an insured driver is going through an intersection when an uninsured motorist fails to stop at the red light. The driver crashes into the insured motorist’s vehicle, causing the driver of that car to sustain moderate injuries and damages. Without an under/uninsured motorist policy, the insured driver would be responsible for all of the expenses that are not covered by their insurer. This type of coverage can prove to be very valuable in the event of hit-and-run accidents that involve uninsured and underinsured drivers.

Motorists should also be prepared to document the names, license plates, make and model of the perpetrators cars, along with any other useful information that can help law enforcement to apprehend these offenders.

Uninsured and underinsured motorists endanger the safety of everyone on the roads. However, with the right precautions, drivers can guard themselves to improve the outcome of any interaction they have with them.

Women at higher risk of car accidents

As the number of motorists on the roads in Tennessee rise, so does the number of car accident situations. According to the NY Times, recent research shows that even when seatbelts are used, male drivers are less likely to be involved in car accidents than women are. Safety features play a role in how well protected women are when they are involved in collisions. The safety features on vehicles are not designed to offer women the same protections as men because of the difference in their physical characteristics, resulting in a higher incidence of injury.

In another study, it was determined that the risk of being involved in car accidents and dying from accident-related injuries for women declined as they got older. Male motorists who were in between the ages of 65-74 years of age had a 1.4 higher risk than women from the same age group of being fatally wounded in car wrecks, states USA Today. The risk for fatal car crashes was almost the same for both genders once they reached the age of 70. Female motorists who were age 35 and up had a disadvantage when compared to male drivers. However, this disadvantage declined with age.

There are several factors that can affect a driver’s ability to survive car crash-related injuries. Women drivers are not as strong or large as their male counterparts. Their age also plays a significant role. Female motorists are more likely to die from being in car crashes if they are in the 21-30 year-old age group. Males in the same age group had a 29.2 percent lower chance of dying from fatal motor vehicle crashes.

Women drivers may have a higher risk of car crashes. However, they can lower their risk for these incidents by paying attention to the road, extending proper road courtesies and using defensive driving tactics when appropriate.

Distracted truck drivers

Distracted driving is a rising epidemic in Tennessee that is not exclusive to regular motorists. Not only do truck drivers endanger themselves, they also put pedestrians and motorists at risk for harm. Distractions like talking and texting on cellphones while driving can cause truckers to overlook up to 50 percent of everything that is going on around them, states TransForce. This includes pedestrians, other motorists and traffic signs and lights.

According to TruckerMagazine.com, each year, distracted commercial driving accidents result in hundreds of thousands of injuries and hundreds of deaths. To reduce the frequency of those incidents, The Department of Labor and Occupational Safety& Health Administration has introduced some new guidelines and regulations to improve truck driver safety. With the creation of the “Distracted Driving Initiative”, more focus can be given to preventing commercial vehicle operators from engaging in behaviors that distract them from driving.

Commercial motorists may feel the temptation to engage in this risky kind of behavior because they spend long hours on the road and often end up feeling bored. They may feel lonely or are in need of some type of side activities to help keep them awake and somewhat focused on the task. Due to the nature of their jobs and the type of vehicle and cargo they may be hauling, truck drivers cannot afford to be distracted in any kind of way. When they do engage in distracted driving, it usually a combination of the three kinds; visual, cognitive and manual.

Commercial vehicle operators who drive distracted should remember that they are not just putting themselves at risk for accident, injury and death, they are also compromising their livelihood. They are also increasing the chances of their employers being held liable. To help mitigate the risks, employers are encouraged to implement processes and regulations that discourage and ban distracted driving behaviors, such as texting.

The impact of drunk driving

The impact of drunk driving in Tennessee has far reaching consequences for all who are involved and their immediate families. Driving while under the influence of alcohol is not an action that should be taken lightly, nor is it one that should be encouraged. According to Hearts for Families, drunk driving causes ripple effects. These effects can be both short-term and long-term.

Emotional Costs

The emotional impact from drunk driving incidents can last long after the situation has occurred. When there is a loss of life or severe injury, the feelings of anger, depression and anxiety may linger on indefinitely. The victims of these situations and the drunk drivers can become so overridden with guilt that it manifests into anger and other negative feelings that can perpetuate the cycle and quite possibly lead to future drunk driving occurrences.

Financial Implications

Drunk driving accidents often create financial burdens for all parties that are involved. Victims and their families may have to deal with medical bills, lost wages and other expenses. Drunk drivers may find themselves facing higher insurance premiums, legal fees, liability expenses, repair costs, rehabilitation bills and a lower credit score.

One percent of non-drunk driving motorists who are involved in fatality-related car wrecks are seven times less likely to have prior DUI convictions than seven percent of drivers who have a 0.08 percent or higher blood alcohol content, states the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Every 53 minutes, a person dies from being involved in a drunk driving accident every day.

Motorists face all sorts of risks when they are on the road. Drivers who operate their vehicles while they are intoxicated are putting everyone at risk of having to deal with the consequences of their decisions.

Truck accidents

Truck accidents are on the rise in Tennessee. Drivers of semi -trucks and big rigs often spend many hours behind the wheel. Due to the nature of their jobs, many truck drivers find themselves engaging in unsafe driving behaviors in an effort to fulfill their duties. However, the number of truck driving incidents is decreasing. Due to new policies and laws in the trucking industry and oversight from the government and federal officials, the number of truck accidents that occurred from 2007 to 2010 declined by 25 percent, states uShip.

Causes of truck accidents

There are many reasons why truck drivers are involved in accidents. They could be distracted by something or someone inside of their vehicles while they are operating them. Semi-drivers may not be too familiar with the roads they are traveling on. They may also use illegal and improper driving maneuvers that cause other drivers to try to compensate for their actions. Primary causes of truck accidents involve semi-drivers being too tired to pay full attention to the road, their vehicle and other motorists; and driving too fast without regard for road conditions.

The statistics

According to a study in Science Daily, eight percent of all traffic on the highways is from trucks. 11 percent of highway accidents involve commercial vehicles. 4,500 people die each year from injuries they sustained from being involved in truck accidents. When the number of trucks on the road increases and the traffic volume of other vehicles decreases, the number of truck crash incidents rise. So does the severity of those accidents.

Truck drivers can take certain measures to reduce their chances of being involved in a crash. Taking frequent breaks, getting training for their vehicles and using safe driving behaviors can help to keep them and everyone else who is on the road safe.

Quickly assess the scene and check yourself and any fellow passengers for injury. Contact the police and emergency medical personnel. If you are able to get out of your vehicle, do so when it is safe. You should put up road flares to alert other drivers of the situation so they can maneuver safely out of the way to prevent further crashes, injuries and to make it easier for law enforcement and medical responders to arrive at the scene.

As frightening and confusing as this type of experience can be, try to remain calm and level-headed. The actions you take immediately afterward can determine your outcome.
