How to avoid getting in an accident with a truck

The sheer number of truck drivers on the roads is increasing every day. According to State Farm, these people log over 288 billion miles each year. Knoxville motorists who share the streets with truckers who spend long hours on the roads are at risk of collisions that can alter the course of their lives forever. To prevent this from happening, motorists should take preventative measures.

Understand the factors that increase accident risk

Drivers should understand that their cars are much smaller than most commercial vehicles. Trucks are much heavier and require more skill to navigate as well. They also have blind spots that make it difficult for operators to see on the sides of them, states ConsumerAffairs. Motorists should exercise concern when driving near trucks and avoid cutting them off and allow a greater stopping distance.

Monitor road conditions

Roads that are under construction and are affected by inclement weather conditions are often just as challenging for truckers to navigate as they are for regular motorists. Car drivers should pay attention to the roads and everything in their driving fields so they can avoid low visibility areas that make driving more difficult. Wet, snowy and icy weather conditions can also increase the likelihood of truck drivers encountering problems with steering their vehicles and trying to overcompensate with their driving maneuvers.

Aggressive driving

Many truckers are just as guilty of aggressive driving as regular motorists. Drivers should watch for commercial vehicles that weave in and out of traffic, speed, brake suddenly and tailgate so they can avoid them.

Remain predictable

Drivers of regular cars and motorcycles that make sudden and unpredictable driving maneuvers can cause truckers to make bad driving judgments that ultimately result in collisions. Motorists should practice safe driving behaviors and use their turn signals when necessary to inform truckers of their intent.

There are other actions motorists can take to keep themselves safe from truckers on the roads. By driving defensively and with respect to the sheer nature and size of these vehicles, regular drivers can avoid collisions with truckers.

GPS navigation devices can be dangerous

Many Tennessee motorists rely on GPS units to aid them while they drive. They make travel easier and more convenient in many cases. However, there is a dark side to GPS navigation systems that motorists need to be aware of. They can also be a source of distraction to drivers, making them dangerous. Sometimes they give inaccurate information and put the drivers who rely on them at risk for becoming lost and involved in car crashes.

Drivers can access directions from GPS-enabled apps on their phones or from using navigational devices. These units receive information directly from satellites. While this may seem like a reliable feature, certain issues can interfere with their signals and cause them to relay incorrect information, such as cloud and weather conditions and interference from external sources.

According to Forbes.com, as many as two percent of distracted driving incidents are caused by drivers handling their GPS units. Some motorists increase their risk of harm by fiddling with these devices while their attention is supposed to be on the road. They take one or both hands off their steering wheels and are unable to drive their cars safely. Sometimes these drivers are so distracted by their GPS devices that they fail to notice that they are nowhere near where they are supposed to be or that they are somewhere completely unsafe or away from civilization.

Drivers should take extra precautions to ensure they do not become victims of GPS navigation system-related incidents, states The Zebra. They should double check their route directions before they get in their vehicles. They should research their routes to ensure there are not any detours that could interfere with their commute. They should also take time to map out alternative routes, make sure that all directions are safe and accurate and keep their GPS apps and systems updated.

With proper precaution and awareness, drivers who decide to use GPS navigational devices can do so safely.

Are female drivers better motorists than men?

In Knoxville, it is not uncommon to see female motorists on the road. Historically, young women motorists have been perceived as worse drivers than men. Commonly cited reasons for this misconception were age, driving skill and gender. Cars have long been associated with masculinity, and when it comes to driving it is no different. However, according to USA Today, young women were found to be more responsible and safer drivers than their teenage male counterparts. Regardless of which sex is the safer group of drivers, teenage motorists are still considered the most dangerous group on the roads.

There are many factors that contribute to vehicle collisions like car type, driver behavior and road conditions. In a recent study, it was found that women do not spend as much time on the roads as male motorists, giving them a lower fatality percentage for each mile driven. Men tend to purchase masculine looking cars that have lower safety ratings than the smaller and fuel-efficient vehicles that women tend to prefer.

In another study, it was found that males are more likely to crash their vehicles on the weekends and in the evenings. It was also determined that men tend to drive aggressively more often than women, states CBS News. They also are less likely to drive on restricted licenses.

Car accidents do not discriminate against name, age or sex. Male teenage drivers should pay better attention to the roads, their driving behaviors and be more mindful of the misconceptions that can affect their mindset and driving actions.

How can bikers deal with road rage?

Motorcyclists in Knoxville experience road rage just like other motorists on the roads. However, due to the nature and structure of their vehicles, the consequences for this type of situation are often life changing.

According to Pacific Standard, many aggressive motorists feel there are no direct consequences for their actions. They can intimidate riders and drivers without fear of repercussions. However, people who are victims of road rage often become provoked. They are likely to retaliate and antagonize the offenders. This leads to a vicious cycle that often ends with injuries and in some cases death. Bikers who encounter angry drivers should take actions to minimize the amount of interaction they have with them.

Avoid confrontation

Many aggressive drivers want confrontation. Bikers should avoid it at all costs. Confrontation can only lead to escalation and harm. Road raging drivers may yell, scream and use gestures to indicate their displeasure. Motorcyclists should do their best to ignore them. They should also not respond to them.

Leave the Scene

Some aggressive drivers look for the perfect opportunity to attack. They may get out of their vehicles during a traffic stop or a car accident to confront the other party and attack them. Bikers should pay attention to the actions of road raging motorists at all times. The moment situations look like they could turn into confrontations or attacks, bikers should do their best to the leave the scene when possible, states Chaparral Motorsports.

Motorcyclists should take every action possible to keep themselves from becoming victims of road rage accidents. Ignoring the situation and using good driving behaviors can help to prevent confrontations and injuries.

Truckers and road rage

Road rage is an everyday occurrence on the roads in Knoxville. As prevalent as road raging passenger car drivers are, more awareness should be given to road raging truckers. People who drive semi-trucks, big rigs and other types of commercial vehicles are just as likely to drive aggressively as other motorists. When accidents occur, the consequences are more serious for everyone who is on the roads with them.

According to Sewell Motor Express, 66 percent of trucking accidents occur during the daytime; 78 percent of commercial vehicle collisions happen on the weekends. These accidents are not caused by driver error, vehicle failure and driver fatigue alone. Many of them involve road raging drivers. Truckers are human and just like every other motorist, they are trying to reach their destinations.

Common reasons for rage

“Men are more inclined to drive aggressively than women drivers,” states Big City Driver. Truckers are under a great deal of stress to complete their jobs and may act out by exhibiting bad driving behaviors. They may throw things around inside their vehicle cabins or out the windows when other motorists pull in front of them or resort to screaming and yelling obscenities at others. They may even engage in tailgating and turning closely to other vehicles to intimidate other drivers.

Avoiding road raging truckers

Drivers can avoid road raging commercial vehicle drivers by monitoring their actions. They should look for truck operators who are speeding, driving aggressively and making sudden stops and dangerous turns. They should also avoid getting into confrontations with these professionals and tailgating their vehicles.

Road rage truck accidents are preventable. Drivers should never underestimate the intentions of another driver, nor should they ignore their actions.

Common causes of truck accidents

Commercial truck accidents are on the rise in Knoxville. These are many reasons why these types of accidents take place. According to CNBC, in 2012, there were 10,659,380 trucks on the roads. The amount of commercial vehicles that were equipped with safety technology was almost 10 percent. The number of injuries that were sustained from truck accidents was more than 284.

Trucker fatigue

Many truckers driver for many hours without rest. They are tired and fatigued which makes them less alert. Sleep deprivation has caused many truckers to make driving errors that result in collisions with other motorists resulting in injuries, deaths and significant property loss.

Speed

Truckers who speed create unsafe driving conditions for other drivers, especially if there are poor weather conditions. Many truckers are under pressure to make deliveries by a certain time. The risk of collisions and fatalities are double for truckers who drive over 45 mph, states Science Daily.

Other motorists

Some people who drive passenger cars fail to give commercial vehicle operators enough driving space. They become aggressive when they see these vehicles and attempt to outmaneuver them by speeding to jump in front of them, not allowing them to get over and by trailing too closely behind them. What they fail to realize is that trucks have blind spots. They also require more stopping time because of their large sizes and cargo loads. Truckers cannot make sudden stops. When they do, the motion can cause their vehicles to jackknife, turn and move in unwanted and unexpected directions and even tip and roll over. This affects the safety of every motorist that is in close vicinity to those vehicles.

There are many factors that can affect a trucker’s ability to safely drive their vehicle. Motorists should be respectful of these drivers, know their limitations and plan their driving actions accordingly to avoid accidents with them.

Common causes of motorcycle accidents

When motorcycle accidents happen in Knoxville, they often cause harm and injuries to the riders and anyone else who is involved. Motorcycle accidents happen for many reasons and when they do, they are often severe or fatal. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Highway Loss Data Institute, in 2015, there were 4,693 fatal biker crashes. Five percent of those deaths occurred during the month of December. These accidents were not caused by biker error alone. Many of them involved passenger cars. Bikers should make themselves aware of what the common causes of motorcycle accidents are before they hit the roads so they can take preventative actions to avoid them.

Improper left turn from another vehicle

When other motorists fail to pay attention at intersections and cannot see bikers that are behind them due to blind spots and for other reasons, they are likely to make left turns that cause collisions. Bikers can avoid this type of situation by traveling at safe distances, anticipating the actions of the drivers in front and around them and by paying attention to signs of intent.

Drunk driving

Bikers who indulge in alcohol before riding are a big risk to themselves and everyone else. So are other motorists who drink before driving. Drunk driving leads to lower inhibitions, reaction times, poor driving judgments and accidents. Crashes lead to injuries and even lost lives. Bikers can protect themselves by staying off their motorcycles if they plan to drink. If they are sober, they should pay attention to the actions of other motorists and stay steer clear of any they suspect are intoxicated.

Taking corners too fast

Bikers who speed around corners are unable to predict and see what may be the other side of them, states RideApart. By taking the corners too fast they risk collision with animals, people, other motorists and road structures like poles and buildings. To avoid this kind of situation, motorcyclists should slow down when they approach corners so they can turn safely.

Many motorcycle-related accidents are preventable. Bikers should exercise due diligence and caution when riding so they can protect themselves and other motorists.

Older drivers and accidents

More seniors in Knoxville are living longer than ever and are holding on to their driving privileges much longer. Even though they have a wealth of driving experience, many seniors still find themselves involved in car accidents. Older people have different driving habits than they had when they were younger.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of senior motorists who sustain injuries in car accidents is 586. The number of older drivers on the roads increased by 34 percent from 1999 to 2012, resulting in 36 million senior citizens who exercise their driving privileges. Older drivers who are involved in car crashes are more likely to suffer from severe injuries than younger motorists. This is due to their age, diminished vision and cognitive abilities, medication and less dexterity, states ABC News.

Older drivers are often considered one of the safest driving groups because they limit the amount of time they spend on the roads. They are less likely to travel when it is dark outside and in areas like the freeway where there is a high volume of traffic. Senior drivers also tend to wear their seatbelts when they are behind the wheel. However, when they do get into accidents, it is often because they make critical driving mistakes, such as driving too slowly, keeping an improper driving distance and not noticing traffic signs.

Seniors who take certain medications, exhibit diminished vision, mental functions and lack driving confidence are at risk for car wrecks and should consider using an alternative means of transportation.

Guarding against [uninsured/underinsured] drivers

Motorists in Tennessee should be on guard against uninsured and underinsured drivers. These people are not only carelessly disregarding the law, they are also putting every other motorist who is on the road with them at risk for harm and financial setbacks. According to Insurance Information Institute, only 49 of the 50 states require drivers to have auto insurance. Some of the drivers who are on the road only carry the bare minimum that is allowed, others do not have a policy at all.

When car accidents happen that involve uninsured and underinsured drivers, it is hard for victims to recover financially from the damage and injuries they may have incurred. The cost of injuries and damages are usually catastrophic. Having the state minimum in auto insurance is not enough to cover the financial aftermath of most car accidents, states ConsumerReports.org. Many insured drivers who find themselves dealing with this type of situation must pay for these expenses themselves or sue the at-fault driver, which is no guarantee of payment. Any expenses that they incur that are not covered by their own policies they have to pay for themselves.

There are ways drivers can protect themselves from uninsured and underinsured drivers. Many insurers offer uninsured and underinsured coverage that can be added into existing policies. This type of coverage makes it possible for innocent drivers to receive some type of compensation if the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured. It only applies if the victim’s insurer does not cover any injuries or damages that occurred from the situation.

Auto insurance may be so expensive to some people that they opt to drive without enough or any coverage at all. However, dealing with the consequences of car accidents is much more expensive and can present financial challenges for many years to come. Drivers can protect themselves from having to deal with this type of situation by checking their policies and adding underinsured and uninsured coverage.

The high chance of wrongful death in motorcycle crashes

Nothing comes close to the freedom of a motorcycle ride on the open highway. Unfortunately, Tennessee bikers are at much higher risk of injuries and fatalities as a result of inattentive motorists compared to operators of other vehicles. A car or truck driver may walk away unscathed from a crash that results in the wrongful death of a motorcycle rider.

One such tragedy occurred at the end of September 2016. WREG reports that a truck driver collided with a motorcycle late one evening, killing the motorcycle operator and injuring his female companion severely. The driver responsible for the accident compounded this terrible situation by failing to remain at the scene of the crash and attempting to hide the truck rather than acting responsibly to provide aid for the victims.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, fatal motorcycle crashes have been on the rise in the United States since the early 2000s. Out of all 2015 vehicle crashes, 13 percent were motorcycle crashes that resulted in fatalities. Among these motorcycle crashes, 59 percent involved multiple vehicles. An overwhelming majority of riders in these fatal motorcycle crashes were male, and 30 percent were under the age of 30.

IIHS notes that motorcyclists do not enjoy the structural protections that shield other vehicle operators during traffic accidents, and injuries and wrongful deaths are much more likely to occur in crashes that involve motorcycles. Although motorcyclists should ride responsibly, it is also crucial that all vehicle operators watch out for them by checking their mirrors and blind spots.
